CHAPTER EIGHT

Gunshots could be heard off in the distance when Beau dropped Lauren and Michael off at his parent's place. They had just enough time to pack the necessities and warn their neighbors about the impending danger before they departed from Argyll Estates.

“You don't have to go, Beau.” Lauren gave him a worried look.

“John says that they're going to need both of us this time.”

“Maybe he can manage without you.”

“He didn't seem to think so. I'll be okay, Laur. It's the regular people putting their lives on the line that are going to get hurt if I don't go.”

“I know. I just wish it was different.”

“Me too. I'll be back before you know it.”

“You better be.” Lauren hugged Beau and kissed him. “Be safe.”

“I will.” Beau crouched in front of Michael and tussled his hair. “You take care of your mom while I'm gone.... okay, Mikey?”

“Okay, Boo. I will.” The youngster was distracted by the ‘fireworks’ as Lauren referred to the gunfire as so as not to worry him. Mikey gave Beau a quick hug and hurried off into the house with his mom. They stopped at the front door as Beau drove away and waved to him.

As he raced down Main Street, Beau opened his window to try and determine where the shooting was coming from as it sounded much more intensive than the shootout at the Ford dealership. He pulled over on 2nd Avenue and got out of his vehicle to get a better read of the situation. There was a significant amount of gunfire coming from the south side of town, but Beau could also hear several shots from the north, as well. He looked around for John and wondered where the Celestial was. When he couldn't find him, Beau decided that it would be best to deal with the gunfire south of town as he was already here.

Advancing into the shadows cast by the full moon, Beau emerged from them cloaked in black and proceeded down the street and across the train tracks. The gunfire was coming from his left, but Beau couldn't determine where exactly from his current location. He glanced up at the roof of the closest grain elevator and found himself perched on top of it a second later.

To the east, Beau could see where the heaviest of the shooting was taking place. Range Road 16 leading into town had two combines sitting in front of the train tracks, effectively blocking all passage in and out of Paradise Flats on that road. A group of men picked by Sergeant Jasper sat in the grain bins of the two farm machines, firing to the south at incoming intruders. Five vehicles were parked a quarter mile away and a truck sat in the middle of the road half that distance from the tracks and drew most of the fire from the town's defenders.

As he watched the battle taking place, Beau saw that several intruders were looking to flank the men in the combines. The intruders
